Fit for the future projects and investments

This involves a keen awareness of industrial strategies and policies, ongoing assessment of industrial land demand and sectors that can thrive in this location and an honest, ongoing appraisal of the area's strengths and weaknesses.

Objective

We work towards future-proofing the local industrial zones so that their industrial land designation is protected, they are fit for the businesses and workforce of the future and can attract continued investment.

Forecast Investment

2022-2027: £150,000

Investment to date

This area of our work focusses on longer-term strategic developments that are likely to have an impact on BID members over the next 5-10 years.  We prioritise the following areas:

Havering Council - Influence and shape policies and investments that affect BID Members and can bring economic benefits to existing and new businesses, For example, the superfast fibre project delivered in 2023, transport developments at Beam Park (housing), Beam Reach (industrial accommodation) and the Future Cube innovation hub;

Greater London Authority - ensure the Mayor's policies and focus provide opportunities for outer London boroughs such as Havering and for industrial businesses;

Port of London Authority - River Thames and Waterways Strategy to activate use of the river for freight and passenger transport;

Transport for London - Ongoing lobbying for improved public transport connections into the London Riverside BID area;

Raise the profile of the area - In collaboration with key stakeholders, promote the area as an ideal location for both advanced industry and technology-based businesses and smaller, more traditional firms that provide vital local employment and productivity.

Additional priorities this term

Lobby Havering Council to develop a master plan for Rainham so that there is an ambitious vision for the area based on its strengths and the opportunities that are evolving, including:

- Thames Freeport and Thames Estuary Production Corridor.

- Growing demand for industrial land, especially for last-mile logistics infrastructure.

- Increasing use of the river and rail for freight.

- Relocation of London's wholesale markets and building of London's largest film studio and media centre nearby.

Develop strategies and an evidence base to protect the status of the area as an industrial zone so that business premises are safeguarded and the area continues to provide a broad range of employment and business opportunities.

Lobby Havering Council to invest in meanwhile-use and workshop-style business premises that encourage and nurture entrepreneurialism and economic activity, especially amongst those that are economically insecure or lacking the support to bring their ideas to market.
